The cat models for this painting belong to my sister, Elaine. The cats names are Cleo, on the left and Petie, on the right. The birds flying in the background were painted by drawing into wet oil paint with a rubber tipped brush. It is nice to be able to reintroduce line into a painting and the technique is called scraffito, which is an Italian word. It is also fun to take a flight of fancy like the unreal looking birds and add a bit of magic realism to the piece. This painting is part of a series of work that will be in my upcoming exhibit, “Two by Two” opening at my gallery on April 12, 2008.

What a beautiful portrait you have made of our cats Cleo and Petie, it takes my breath away. I had people tell me they thought it was a photograph. What wonderful work you do, so realistic. I love the background you put on it with the birds, I would love to see it in real life.
You are so talented!! Love your sister and brother-in-law, Elaine and Michael
