This painting pays homage to one of my favorite artists, Gustav Klimt. Klimt did some amazing paintings incorporating decorative patterns, textures and materials (like gold leaf) into his figurative subjects. His work is lush, sensual, and erotic at times and all about beauty, decadence and the human condition. Another for the Two by Two exhibit.

The cat models for this painting belong to my sister, Elaine. The cats names are Cleo, on the left and Petie, on the right. The birds flying in the background were painted by drawing into wet oil paint with a rubber tipped brush. It is nice to be able to reintroduce line into a painting and the technique is called scraffito, which is an Italian word. It is also fun to take a flight of fancy like the unreal looking birds and add a bit of magic realism to the piece. This painting is part of a series of work that will be in my upcoming exhibit, “Two by Two” opening at my gallery on April 12, 2008.

Musicians and their instruments
are favorite subjects of mine.
I especially like the upright bass
because of the visual drama that
is created by the instrument being
larger than a human being.

Often, when you see a bass player
performing, there seems to be a kind
of dance going on between the
instrument and the musician.
